Alice Ivy & Sycco 'Weakness'
Port Macquarie rocks to Melbourne's 'Alice Ivy' & Queensland's 'Sycco's' hit 'Weakness' - A winning combination of disco-friendly beats & psych-pop flair. This going to be the soundtrack of summer '21
Alice Ivy has a reputation for getting unique performances out of the amazing female and gender-diverse artists she links up with.
Her recent Georgia Maq joint and second album Don't Sleep being case in point.
Now, the Naarm/Melbourne producer and collaborator has tapped Sycco - the 19-year-old whose come a long way in the short time since her Hottest 100 hit 'Dribble' and the recent Sycco's First EP.
The result is 'Weakness', a collaboration that brings the psychedelic flavours of Sycco's Queensland Music Award-winning, NIMAS nominated songwriting to bear on a production that gives license to Alice Ivy to show off her love of vintage disco, Motown, and soul grooves.
The guitars chop, the synths glide, but the secret star might be the combo of percussion and bottom-end, with a bassline courtesy of Nick Movshon.
He's a New York session wizard who's played on the funkiest of cuts from Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse, and Bruno Mars.
Despite never having met before, let alone written together, Annika (that's Alice Ivy) and Sasha (that's Sycco) instantly hit it off when they linked up.
"There were many attempts to get into the studio with Sycco over the past year but due to the constant border closures, we decided to jump on a Zoom and try and write something instead," Annika explains.
"Weakness was one of the quickest and best [remote] sessions I have ever done!"
Sasha adds: "Annika sent me a demo of it before the session and as soon as we started the session everything fell into place so quickly."
The track is a very early serve of Alice Ivy's forthcoming third studio album, which will see her relocating to Los Angeles next year to continue writing and recording with some high profile US connections she made during lockdown.
“I've grown so much as a producer since the release of Don't Sleep last year," she says.
"I'm exploring new sounds through lots of analogue hardware and also touching back to what got me excited about producing in the first place a soul, Motown and psychedelic influenced sonic universe. This is the beginning of a bigger journey."
Before she jets off, Alice Ivy will send off 2021 with a festival performance at Victoria's NYE On The Hill.
Meanwhile, Sycco has lined up some high profile live shows.
The Unearthed fave is opening up for Flight Facilities and Tame Impala on tour next year (have you heard her cover of 'Lost In Yesterday'?), as well playing Victorian all ages shows for The Push and the new Tassie festival Party In The Apocalypse.

We had plans for Sycco and I to shoot this video together but border restrictions meant we had to shoot it in two parts! We had to jump through so many hoops to make it possible but in the end I'm so happy with how it came out and I'm so grateful to everyone for making Sycco and I look cool af. "Weakness" is out everywhere run it up! https://awal.ffm.to/weakness
