Queen Elizabeth II & royal family pay final respects
Queen Elizabeth II has made her first public appearance since the death of the Duke of Edinburgh, as she and her family paid their final respects to Prince Philip.

News Story Summary:

HRH Prince Philip, died aged 99, on April 9th.

The Queen, dressed in black and in a white trimmed black face mask, stood alone as the funeral service began in Windsor Castle's St George's Chapel, which dates back to 1475.

Mourners at the ceremony were limited to 30 people and separated due to COVID-19 rules.

These mourners included the heir to the throne Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, the monarch's three other children and eight grandchildren, as well as their spouses except for Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.

Meghan, who is pregnant, did not attend on the advice of her doctor.

Other guests included Princess Margaret's children, and four members of the Mountbatten family.

"We are here today in St George's Chapel to commit into the hands of God the soul of his servant Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," the Dean of Windsor, David Conner, said.

"We have been inspired by his unwavering loyalty to our Queen, by his service to the Nation and the Commonwealth, by his courage, fortitude and faith."

Ceremony carried out with Prince's personal touches

efore the procession, military bands spaced out across the quadrangle of Windsor Castle to play the duke's chosen music, including 'I Vow To Thee My Country', 'Jerusalem' and 'Nimrod'.

The funeral began with details the duke helped author, which included his coffin being lifted onto a custom Land Rover Defender he partly helped design.

Senior military commanders lined up in front of the vehicle, with members of the royal family following behind.

The Queen rode in the State Bentley at the rear of the procession.

His naval cap and sword lay on top of the coffin, which was covered with the Duke of Edinburgh's personal standard featuring the Danish coat of arms, the Greek cross, Edinburgh Castle and the stripes of the Mountbatten family — representing the various European royal lineages of the duke.

Prince Philip spent almost 14 years in the Royal Navy and saw action in the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean and Pacific during World War II.

Former Bishop of London Richard Chartres, who knew the Duke well, said the prince was a man of faith, but liked things kept succinct.

"He was at home with broad church, high church and low church, but what he really liked was short church," Bishop Chartres told the BBC.

"I always remember preaching on occasions which he was principal actor that the instruction would always come down: 'No more than four minutes'."

Princes William and Harry garner attention

After the United Kingdom observed a minute's silence to mark the beginning of the funeral, princes Harry and William took up their places on opposite sides of the chapel with the final resting place of Tudor monarch Henry VIII dividing them.

Much of the media's focus surrounding the ceremony has surrounded Prince Harry, as he made his first public appearance with the family since the Sussexes gave an explosive interview to Oprah Winfrey last month.

In the interview they made a number of revelations, which included the souring of relations between princes William and Harry; a lack of mental health support by from Buckingham Palace for Meghan; and concerns of one unnamed royal about the skin colour of their first-born child, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor.

Prince Harry also said both his father, Prince Charles and his brother William were trapped in the royal family.

It has been speculated that Prince Harry's loss of his honorary military titles, which was triggered by his decision to step down as a senior royal despite serving two tours in Afghanistan, prompted the royals to eschew the tradition of wearing military uniforms at the funeral.

When asked about the recent tensions between the duke's grandchildren, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said they weren't "going to be drawn into those perceptions of drama, or anything like that".

"This is a funeral. The arrangements have been agreed and they represent her majesty's wishes."
