Video News Story:
"'Crimson and Clover' was so very important to us because it allowed us to make that move from AM Top 40 to album rock. I don't think there's any other song that we've ever worked on, any other record that we made, that would have done that for us quite that way." Tommy James.
We met up with Hubert Humphrey right after the Democratic convention, you know, the convention where all the kids got beat up.
And we met up with him again the following week in Wheeling, West Virginia.
We had been asked to join Hubert Humphrey on the campaign trail. This really was the first time, I think, a rock act and a politician ever teamed up. But it was an incredible experience.
As Tommy explains, we were never supposed to hear the mix of this song that became a hit. Says James: "When we went into the studio to do it, we actually finished the record in about 5 ½ hours.
And of course we had done everything; we wrote the song, we produced the record, we did all the things we had to do.
We designed the album cover, we got to the point where we almost took the creative process right on into the retail store.
It was amazing. One of the things that was great about Roulette is that they allowed us the freedom to do these things. There was never any hand around our throat. At least not for that reason.
There was never anybody who was really leaning on us. We had all the budgets, what we needed, we could take our time, whatever we could become, Roulette allowed us to be. So I'm thankful for that. And we had the public's attention long enough to morph into the second phase of our career.
'Crimson and Clover' allowed us to go on and have a phase two of our career. no other record we ever did could have done that.

I was blind as a child and didn't know what crimson was, other than a color.. At 17, I got my sight and saw this beautiful girl and I began crying because I had never known what a girl looked like ... This song was playing when I saw her.. Every time I hear it, she appears in my mind..

I am 16 years old and I mostly like 60's and 70s music. This modern music really can't get close in any way to these oldies and goldies.

Tommy James was way ahead of his time. He was like the first Prince.

When my daughter was born this was the first song on the radio when I got in the car to drive home from the hospital. It was also the father daughter dance at her wedding.

Played this in a garage band in the 60's. 6 kids with electric instruments and my set of drums. We were the coolest thing in the whole garage.
