Would Prince Charles Abdicate?
Prince Charles is set to become King when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, passes away – but is there any chance he will step aside so his son, Prince William, can take the throne?

A 2019 survey showed that almost half of the British public want Prince Charles to stand aside and let his eldest son William become the next King.

The survey by BMG Research on behalf of The Independent found that 46 percent of Britons want the first in line to the throne to abdicate immediately to allow the Duke of Cambridge to take over.

A further 27 percent of those polled showed "strong support" for directly passing the crown to William.

In 2015 YouTube documentary 'The Madness of Prince Charles', royal experts discuss if Prince Charles should get the “top job”.

Speaking in the documentary, Paul Henke, a former shipmate to Prince Charles in the Royal Navy said: “I think it’s very difficult that he has to be the King-in-waiting for so long.

On the other hand, we're all living longer, the Queen’s going to live a lot longer. Hopefully Prince Charles comes to the throne and he’s going to live a long time.

“The worst thing that could happen is for his son [Prince William] to come to the throne too young."

Royal biographer Penny Junor believes Charles “does think he will become King".

She added: “I certainly don’t think he’s preparing to hand over to William or to abdicate himself.

“I think he will become King."

Royal author Gill Knappett wrote in a 2018 book, titled, "Charles, Prince of Wales", that “Prince William does not wish to take the throne early".

She continued: “Although, like his father, William will be destined to have a far shorter reign than his grandmother, he has no desire to ‘climb the ladder of kingship’ before his time.”

Under common law, Prince Charles will automatically become King the moment the Queen dies and Prince William could only become King if Prince Charles chose to abdicate

That would require legislation, as happened with the Declaration of Abdication Act 1936.

According to research compiled by University College London’s Constitution Unit, for the Queen, “abdication is said to be unthinkable”, for two reasons.

The first is the “bad example of Edward VIII and how his abdication brought a constitutional crisis on the British Monarchy”.

The second is “her declaration on her 21st birthday that she would serve for her whole life whether it be long or short".
