PMHC General Manager Craig Swift-McNair is required to inform the Office of Local Government and range of agencies of councillor Cusato's resignation. Permission will be sort to not fill vacancy.

Councillor Mike Cusato resigns from PMHC. first elected to PMH council in September 2012.

Under the terms of the NSW Local Government Act 1993, the PMHC's general manager will apply to the Minister for Local Government, seeking permission not to fill the councillor vacancy.

This provision can be enabled due to councillor Cusato's resignation occurring within 18 months of the next ordinary local government election, tabled for September 2020.

If the Minister orders that the vacancy not be filled, then no by-election is required.

Mayor Peta Pinson wished Mr Cusato, his family and business well for the future.

Council also thanked Mr Cusato for his service, and contribution to council and the community.

Cr Cusato's raised his final motion at the September council meeting, asking the general manager to investigate the impacts of removing the contentious east-west "most viable" orbital road option from council's strategic business case.

Background:

Counciller Mike Cusato is a farmer and owner of the much loved Growers Market.

Counciller Cusato moved to the Port Macquarie-Hastings in 1981 with his family. He attended school in Port Macqurie and later boarding school in Armidale.

When standing for Council election Mike said "I want to be a Councillor to be a part of the decision making team that helps our area to build its reputation as the best place the world".

"I would also like to see Council more approachable and supportive of projects and community events; at the moment it’s like they’ve got the big stick out, and it’s hard to get them to listen. I’d like to see Council supporting and working together with the community to achieve positive outcomes for the community" Mike said.

Back in 2012 when Mike first stood for Council election his 2020/2030 vision for Port Macquarie / Hastings was:

"I’d love to see this area really live up to its potential in being the best place in the world to live, work and visit. I believe that through balanced development that protects our beautiful landscape, we can have the best of both worlds … A thriving economy, but without the unsightly highrises and over-development".

Counciller Cusato cited personal reasons for his decision to resign.
