Two dead and 16 homes lost in Tara as QLD bushfires rage
Authorities have confirmed 16 homes have been destroyed and a second person has died in the Tara region on Queensland's Western Downs as firefighters continue battling several major bushfires.

News Story Summary:

A man died on Tuesday night while trying to protect his property in Tara and a woman died yesterday after suffering a cardiac arrest.

A dry lightning storm caused firefighters in the region to scramble overnight as the weather phenomenon ignited five small blazes, but they were able to keep them contained.

The fire has burned through more than 11,000 hectares of land in the Tara region and 350 people have been evacuated.

An emergency warning has been issued for Halliford, near Dalby, with residents instructed to leave immediately.

Fire warnings were downgraded to watch and act for Tara, Kogan, Goranba, Weranga and Wiembilla just after 9am, but authorities say it is still not safe for residents in these areas to return home.

Rural Fire Service acting assistant commissioner Peter Hollier said temperatures and winds are expected to increase today

"The wind is going to continue to be strong, potentially gusty at times," he said.

"That will again be another challenging day for us today, as we head into areas of extreme fire danger."

'One of the worst views I've seen':

Tara resident David Maynard captured the devastation while riding his horse along Myra Road.

"It was one of the worst views I've seen in 53 years," Mr Maynard said.

"It's just blackness after blackness out there.

"Today is still unknown ... tomorrow will be a new day to start over for many."

Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) chief superintendent Warren Buckley said the small amount of rain overnight provided a relief for firefighters.

"It is still not safe to return," Mr Buckley said.

"I need to make that 100% clear … it is still a very dangerous fire, unpredictable and not under control at this stage."

He said the township of Tara is safe and residents are not being evacuated, despite a decision to move the local evacuation centre to Dalby yesterday.

Rural Fire Service inspector Joel Gordon (Above left) said light rain overnight had allowed authorities to get a "loose control" of the fire around Tara.

"We have been able to get it into some basic containment lines," Inspector Gordon said.

"The main reason for evacuation, particularly the aged care facility and the hospital, was to manage the smoke impact that was potentially going to impact the town."

He said the aged care facility and hospital in Tara were evacuated to mitigate the risk of smoke inhalation.

In state parliament this morning, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said firefighters had battled more than 100 large fires this week.

"They have fought them around the clock and their work is not over yet," she said.

"All of us pray for the rain from storms forecast in the south east over the next day or so.

"Please continue to listen to the directions of our police and emergency services, take no risks and stay safe."

QFES is bringing in additional resources from across the state to help contain the Tara blaze.
