Eliza Rose 'Baddest Of Them All'
B.O.T.A. quenched the UK’s thirst for sun-kissed dance classics this summer - Think 90's house, cutesy purring vocals & femme fatale voiceovers backed by disco claps & organ stabs - Such a cool vibe..
B.O.T.A. was inspired by the 1973 Blaxploitation flick, Coffy, starring Pam Grier as the eponymous vigilante seeking revenge on a drug dealer profiting from her sister’s heroin addiction.
The movie’s tagline “The baddest one-chick hit squad that ever hit town” provides not just the hook for B.O.T.A. but its verve and attitude, too.
Rose’s vocal flits between cutesy purr and femme fatale voiceover, chugged along on a wash of claps and taut organ stabs.
As reported by NME, Eliza says: "I always use my surroundings to inspire me," adding that: "I was in my boyfriend's bedroom and he had a Coffy poster, and the words were, 'She's the baddest, wickedest in town.'"
"It was a Blaxploitation poster, so that's something I'm proud of and want to represent. I used that to inspire my lyrics and knew what it needed to be—it was strange, like a gift from a higher power."
Speaking about Hackney, Eliza Rose says: "This community in Hackney means so much to me, and collaboration is what’s given me purpose, community, joy, and so much art. It’s hard for working class Black women and marginalised people to break through, so we have to support each other's art, and lift each other up, or it becomes impossible.
"Showing these worlds on screen is also integral to the development of open mind sets, and showing young people that there are different ways of living out here!”
